crosman 140

I picked up a last model 140 at a flea market today. It seems to hold air, but apparently the automatic cocking mechanism isn't functioning. I was going to disassemble to see if I could find the problem, but I'm stuck trying to remove the safety. I don't want to force it although it looks like its just a press fit.
any advice? --- I've searched several forums and didn't find directions.
