Repairing FX Cutlas synthetic stock

Hi there,

I am from NZ and just got into air rifles. Started half a year back with some cheap 0.177 Kral air rifles, then got to a 0.22 Gamo CFX. The CFX was great but decided to get into PCPs.

So my first purchase was a 2nd hand FX Cutlas with a synthetic stock. Unfortunately, a relatively large part of the weaver rail (underside of the stock) got broken off in transport/courier - see attached pic.

So I am trying to find out how to fix the damage in case the courier company doesn't want to pay up for a professional fix or replacement stock.

I was thinking about using some type of adhesive to glue the broken piece back and strong enough to have a bipod attached to it. However, I am not sure what type of adhesive would be best with the FX Cutlas stock.

That is I don't know what the stock is made of. I am assuming that it is somekind of plastic but has some type of filling. The surface of the stock looks plastic but the inside is coarse and almost ceramic looking (i.e. tightly packed porous material and with a fine rough texture) and has some speckles of reflective material.

I suspect it is polyurethane with some kind of ceramic filler. So I am thinking about using Selley's Quick Fix Super Glue (a cyanoacrylate adhesive I think) to bond the broken part back.

I will be using a bipod on the weaver rail and wonder if the super glue would be sufficient enough that the piece will not break off again.

Any help/advice/direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Teong.

Bummer---- Without knowing

what it is, its hard to say what will hold it.

what ever you use be sure to pin it and possibly an under cut with pins....

Repairing FX Cutlas synthetic stock

Yeh...I have been asking around and searching google but no success so far. I'll try to call FX later today.

Best that I have come to is a US Patent paper that talks about synthetic stocks using a mix of polyurethane and silica-alumina ceramic microsphere.

This may be it as it would explain the shiny/reflective bits within the stock material.

Now researching what would be a good adhesive for a polyurethane and ceramic mix. I bought a Selleys Araldite Super Strength epoxy adhesive but am considering whether I should use a Polyurethane adhesive instead.

FX Tarantula Synthetic stock repaired

Hi, sorry to hear about your stock.
My FX Taratula had it's syn stock snapped off at the pistol grip part.
It's made of exactly the same stuff as yours by yhr look of it.
I used regular two part clear epoxy and it has glued it together really
well. It's still holding after a few months now.
If your pieces atill "Fit" back into the gun where they broke off,
maybe try the epoxy route?

glues

use a poly urethane glue like gorilla glue , or an epoxy like was alreadt suggested. super glues don't have good shear stregnth, and won't handle the pressure of the bi-pod.
